The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, one of India’s most powerful and popular politicians, Jayalalithaa (68) died late on Monday in a Chennai hospital, nearly three months after she was admitted there.


Her body was moved from the hospital and taken to her residence at Poes Garden in an ambulance. There was a heavy presence of police personnel outside her residence and on all the roads leading to it. Jayalalithaa’s body will be kept at Rajaji Hall for the public to pay their last respects, AIADMK official Twitter handle posted. President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi are expected to arrive in Chennai today for the last rites. The state government announced seven days of mourning, with educational institutions set to be closed down for three days.

Ms. Jayalalithaa was taken to Apollo Hospital on September 22 where she was admitted for suffering from dehydration and fever. Her condition soon deteriorated, and she was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection. Specialists from Delhi’s AIIMS(All India Institute Of Medical Science) hospital and a pulmonary expert from London were flown in for consults.

November 20, 2016

On November 20, Doctors said in she was no longer in danger, Ms. Jayalalithaa had been relocated from the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors said she was speaking occasionally and was alert. Her party had throughout maintained that she took important decisions from the hospital including on a water dispute with Karnataka.

December 04, 2016

Again Ms. Jayalalithaa had a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening and was rushed back to the Intensive Care Unit or ICU. Finally, Apollo Doctors said Jayalalitha passed away at 11:30 pm (local time).

The party MLAs and officials also conformed amma’s death and they are going to conduct a party meeting to discuss what next.
